Sonia Albin, LPC | Founder + Clinical Director

I have lived in and outside of Mexico, Houston, Seattle, and Maine, and have felt at home in a number of ecosystems. I’ve held many titles: marine biologist, research scientist, environmental educator, elementary school teacher, farmer, barista…I come from a multi-national, multi-cultural family. When I’m not therapizing, I’m outside with my kiddo and my pets, gardening, writing, moving my body, and goofing off.

I dedicated the first part of my career to connecting with nature through science, outdoor adventure education, and horticulture, while doing my own therapeutic work. Nature has always been part of my healing and how I care for others.

I graduated from the University of Washington and earned my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. I have 8 years of combined experience in eating disorder treatment at every level of care. My 5 years of private practice experience has centered on complex trauma presentations.
In addition to my clinical work, I am a published poet, and am at the intersection of advocacy, diplomacy, and mental health to combat antisemitism and strengthen Jewish identity. I am the head and founder of Houston Jewish Therapists.

My approach is genuine, direct, and down to earth. I promise to prioritize your well-being, to be honest, and to listen to your intuition so you can, too.
I incorporate Internal Family Systems, Brainspotting, and Nature, and collaborate with dietitians, physicians, psychiatrists, energy workers, and other therapists as appropriate for a holistic treatment approach.

Transformation has been a necessary and unavoidable part of my life, including international moves and loved ones with chronic illness. I know firsthand how change can be unexpected, scary, and transformative all at once, and although we always hope that change will ultimately lead us to better circumstances, often these challenges also leave their mark.

I specialize in trauma treatment because I believe, on some level, the things we typically call “mental health concerns” are the outward reflection of unmet needs experienced during the changes we go through in life. Whether you wish to try or learn more about talk therapy, EMDR, or Somatic Experiencing—I am here for you, no matter your struggles or your identities.

While my clinical experience has centered around eating disorders and their accompanying symptoms and diagnoses, I really love working with emerging adults, identity exploration, complex trauma presentations, and interpersonal/relationship challenges, with an attachment and relationally-focused approach. I also enjoy working with neurodiverse clients and LGBTQ+ clients.
I have a BS in Psychology and Crisis Counseling from Liberty University and an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The University of St. Thomas.

Believe it or not, I exist outside of the therapist office, too! I love activities that make it easy to be present with my body like crafts, music, art, food, and nature, and I am particularly passionate about incorporating animals in therapy. I live with my partner, a musician and trained therapist himself, and our two beautiful cats, Peanut and Marble.

Why Kite?

While kites are fun, carefree, and a wonderful metaphor for navigating difficult circumstances peacefully, it’s actually not where the name Kite comes from!

Every summer, Buffalo Bayou gets a visit from a migratory bird, the Mississippi Kite. Kites make their way here all the way from Chile. I am delighted to see and hear them as I work in my spring garden, and to know that our Houston environment is just right for them to thrive. Kites, and other migratory animals, can teach us that finding a place of belonging is key to our survival, growth, and healing from trauma.
